Cryptid Files; File 0067: The Scythe Sisters

Description: A pair of Catholic nuns, roaming the countryside and bearing scythes.

Recorded sightings date back to 1902, though possible stories of the nuns date back to the year 100 BC. These older stories are highly anachronistic, being long before the establishment of the catholic church. It is theorized that these nuns serve as inspiration for the earliest depictions of the grim reaper, though this cannot be proven.

Sighting 1; 03-30-1902: Jerusalem, Israel

Two nuns sighted walking on the surface of the Dead Sea while shouldering scythes. Sighted from a small row boat at dawn on Easter sunday. The boaters reportedly called out to the Sisters, only to be ignored.

Sighting 2; 7-20-1932: Los Angeles, California

The Sisters were reportedly seen while preparations were underway for the 1932 Summer Olympics. They were reportedly seen standing stationary in the center of the stadium. When approached, however, they reportedly vanished.

Sightings 3-10; 06-06-1944: Normandy, France

Eight separate soldiers reported seeing nuns bearing scythes casually strolling through the battlefield as Allied forces fought against the Nazis on D-Day. However, there were not only the two Sisters usually sighted, but as many as six at one time.

“It must have been the shock… There were three nuns, and I saw them stop over fallen soldiers to kneel and pray. And I swear… I swear I saw them lift a man to his feet and walk off with him!”

“Somethin’ hit my helmet and must’a knocked me out… I dunno how long I was out, but I opened my eyes and there five nuns huddled around me, just starin’ down at me. If it wern’t for the gunfire I’d have thought I woke up in an infirmary. Anyhow, when I started to move, they just… up and vanished!”

“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen! I was huddled in the fortification, already fearing for my life, and then these six… Creatures! They can’t have been human! They surrounded me with fire in their eyes, their grins like the jaws of a shark! I fainted at the sight, and when I woke, I was here, in your custody.”

Sighting 11; 10-21-1967: Arlington, Virginia

The Sisters were not directly sighted in this case, but captured in a single photograph from a protest to end the war in Vietnam. While a more famous photograph circulated of a young man placing a flower in the barrel of a soldier’s gun, another lesser known picture happened to capture The Scythe Sisters watching from a distance. The original negatives of this photograph are currently in our custody.

Sighting 12; 9-28-1978: Vatican City

These incidents, while in different years, are grouped together as they all took place in the same nation, in the same decade, and under similar circumstances. Unlike the events in World War II, the sisters did not intervene in any of these events, but simply seemed to observe.

Sighting 19-21; 9-11-2001: Various, World
